Job Description

Working across AOF, and reporting to the Chief Administrative Officer, the SVP of Marketing and Communications is responsible for developing and executing a broad-based marketing and communications strategy that supports and strengthens the long- and short-term objectives of the organization. The SVP of Marketing and Communications will have ultimate accountability for all marketing and external communications activities including campaign strategy and creative development, all online and offline channels, brand strategy, identity and positioning, PR and brand partnerships’ content strategy, development, and execution.

This role is responsible for the Marketing and Communications Team, which currently consists of seven team members across various functions, including digital communications, media engagement, executive communications, brand, client and donor acquisition strategy, and external communications. The SVP of Marketing and Communications will develop a longer-term vision for the marketing and communications functions, oversee the organization-wide brand strategy, and develop and implement annual marketing and communications plans which align with the organization’s impact and financial goals.

The SVP of Marketing and Communications will be responsible for communicating with a wide range of audiences, including small business owners, primarily those of color, women, and immigrants. The role will promote AOFs programs and products through multi-channel marketing campaigns, influencers both individuals and partners, as well as media contacts, events, and other external forums. The SVP of Marketing and Communications partners with the Chief Growth Officer on customer research, the customer journeys as well as to identify campaigns to support growth goals. This position will also work closely with the Chief People Officer and serve as a thought partner to executive leadership on internal communications-related issues.

Key Responsibilities/ Accountabilities

  • Determine communications and marketing strategy, initiatives, plans, and project priorities; manage brand and reputation.
  • Serve as a strategic communications advisor to CEO and senior leadership with the success of AOF’s overall mission in mind, while supporting program areas with communication capacities, and ensuring an appropriate level of visibility for their work.
  • Advise internal groups to create/identify communications strategies which will deliver higher levels of impact externally.

  • Provide unified leadership to team on strategy and direction, while evaluating most effective/efficient execution models. Lead successful multi-channel campaigns that leverage the entire organization and deliver a high return on objectives – brand awareness, lead generation, earned and contributed revenue, etc.

  • Ensure that AOF's brand positioning, messaging and identity are a strategic driver of the entire organization by:
    • Measuring and monitoring AOF’s brand strength with target audiences.
    • Continuously updating and enhancing AOF’s brand identity and positioning.
    • Provide templates and guidelines for brand usage to the organization.
    • Collaborate with other externally focused teams within the organization to ensure a consistent and streamlined brand.
    • Ensure consistency across the organization of brand assets, including collateral and owned digital media, as well as staff use of social media.
    • Manage media relations and maximizes media opportunities.
    • Build relationships with key stakeholders in the sector, including journalists and influencers. Direct media outreach, press strategies, press releases. Respond to inquiries and publicize the organization’s programs and activities
    • Serve as the liaison between the CEO as well as other stakeholders, and the media, ensuring spokespersons are prepared for interviews.
    • Identify and seize opportunities to react to events and breaking news.
    • Create, develop, and produce, proactive and appropriate press releases, briefings, articles, and other materials as required.
    • Ensure spokespeople are appropriately trained for media appearances and a consistent approach to media engagement.
  • Manage AOF’s public profile through the management of website, microsites, multi-media, publications, and social media. Oversee the development of rich and creative content that is optimized for search engines.
  • Oversee the writing and design concepts for all printed promotional materials and publications to ensure that they align with the communications plan, conform to organizational style guidelines, and meet established timelines.
  • Act as a mentor, as well as direct leadership and management of the marketing and communications team and, guidance and oversight of communications and marketing activities distributed throughout the organization (such as program and resource development).

The Person

  • Bachelor's or Master’s Degree in Marketing/Communications or the equivalent of 15+ years of experience in a marketing or communications roles with increasing responsibilities at a commercial enterprise and, non-profit organizations.
  • Demonstrated skills, knowledge and experience in the design and execution of marketing, communications, and public relations activities. Outstanding communication, public speaking, and advocacy skills.
  • Ability to communicate complex information in English effectively in writing to all levels of staff, management and external audiences. Adept in forming and maintaining external partnerships and networks.
  • Sound leadership capability and demonstrated track record in a strategic role in which communication considerations are a key part. A strategic thinker who can develop a long-term vision and execute to meet goals.
  • Demonstrated success in crafting a substantive and cohesive set of messages for an organization, which has been successfully communicated to key audiences and resulted in a measurable difference (e.g., elevated profile, broader visibility, increased revenue, increased funding, or donor support) to the organization.
  • Experience in financial services marketing, and specifically the marketing of financial products to small businesses is preferred.
  • Ability to quickly distill complex concepts into interesting and digestible pieces; ability to actively and thoughtfully listen to and incorporate ideas to influence strategy and shape content. Creative and skilled at identifying and seizing opportunities for an organization to reach key audiences.
  • Expertise overseeing the production of digital marketing campaigns, customer journeys, websites, online communities, videos, webinars, infographics, and other multimedia web content. Knowledge and experience with new and social media. Broad understanding of, and willingness to stay abreast of, new media technologies, applications, and processes. Well versed in digital tools and data analytics.
